Thursday, December 5, 2024

Give a listen to Collicot student Declan Conneely, who is a featured reader on the MPL's Dial-a-Story service during the month of December!
As a reminder, Dial-a-Story is a Milton Public Library service where folks can call 617-915-1915 anytime and listen to librarians read stories, tell jokes, and the like. The content changes monthly, and for a while now they've been including guest readers who read a picture book in the Dial 6 slot.
Declan is reading Hibernation Station by Michelle Meadows, and December stories are posted now (they'll be live all month long). Be sure to call and hear Declan read!

It's concert season at MPS! Join us for the MHS Extra Curricular Ensembles Concert on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:30 PM in the MHS Auditorium.

MPS Holiday Gift Drive
MPS has partnered with My Brother’s Keeper and the Milton Residents Fund to host a gift drive to ensure all Milton Families in need have a wonderful holiday season. The gift drive needs donations of all types of items.
Examples include Legos, dolls representing a diverse array of skin tones/cultures, superhero action figures, arts and craft kits, science/STEM kits, board games, video games, books, a football or basketball, outdoor active toys, or anything with Boston sports teams. No food or violent games, please. $25 Target gift cards are also welcome! Please bring new, unwrapped item(s) to a collection box in the lobby of the elementary schools from December 2-6.
We are once again partnering with local toy shops and encourage you to check out the great toy selections at The Toy Chest in East Milton or The Toy Box in Hanover.
Thank you for helping us make the holiday season a little brighter for our neighbors!

Mr. Young's English 12, Exploring Nature class enjoyed a trip to Blue Hills Weather Observatory last week. The class hiked to the Observatory and were given a tour of the oldest weather station in the country. Students will read poems and nonfiction about extreme weather in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to the MHS Cheer team on their 6th place finish in the D2 State Championship over the weekend!
Go 'Cats!

Mrs. Walsh's Cunningham 2nd graders enjoyed a successful trip to the DPW last week! Thank you to Tom McCarthy, Director of Consolidated Facilities, who invited the class in honor of Walshville (a year long exploration of our community) after receiving Henry Liguori’s letter about the DPW. Students toured the facility and learned about the various trucks and jobs.
The class has also had visits from representatives from Milton Police and Fire, the US Post Office, Donahue Real Estate, Animal Control, the Ice Cream Smith, the Collicot Assistant Principal, the Fruit Center and Pleasant St Market. Thank you to all who have taken the time to help our students learn more about their Milton community!

Pierce Pals are thankful for their teachers!

MHS Best Buddies got in the Thanksgiving spirit and celebrated Friendsgiving this week with friends, games, snacks, and fun! Members created a Gratitude Tree and wrote down everything they are thankful for. They are already looking forward to their next party!

A message from the Milton School Committee
Over the past several years, the Milton School Committee has explored how we can make our district calendar inclusive and more representative of our diverse community. We revised our calendar policy in 2022 to ensure that students celebrating holidays not acknowledged with an official day off would receive necessary accommodations. We are in the process of reviewing our calendar and need your input. We are gathering community input through a survey, a series of open conversations taking place in schools and the November 20 School Committee meeting. We hope all will share their thoughts in one of those ways.
The survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/RmLtV4T6xaFx3k658

Once Upon a Mattress is almost here! ! A hilarious take on “The Princess and the Pea,” Once Upon A Mattress sets an unapologetic free spirit loose in a repressed kingdom, reveling in Winnifred's ability to charm and transform with willpower, honesty, and a little bit of help from her friends.
Don't miss out on seeing our talented MHS Theatre students during four (sure to be sell out) shows on Thursday, November 21st 7pm; Saturday, November 23rd at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday, November 24th at 2pm.

The Wildcat Marching Band Shines at State Finals!

The band earned a bronze medal and a four-star rating in Music for their high-energy show, "Dance." Congratulations to the Wildcat Marching Band on a fantastic season!

We have a new Project 351 Ambassador!
The Commonwealth’s Project 351 celebrates the ethic of service, youth leadership, and the unifying and uplifting power of community. Pierce eighth grade student Alyssa Zullas has been selected as Milton’s Project 351 ambassador. Through her yearlong ambassador journey, Alyssa will represent Milton in a variety of leadership roles and community service projects. Congratulations, Alyssa!!

MHS Best Buddies had a blast their annual Halloween Party. Students were able to trick-or-treat, play bingo, compete in the mummy wrap and much more! Keep an eye out for upcoming Best Buddies events and join the fun!

Some of the best days of the year are our school's Veterans Day events. Today, it was Cunningham, with honored Veteran guests, special speakers, student music and an all school flag raising. Thank you to all who have served!

Last week, our 6th graders traveled to the Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon where they participated in a guided hike to observe geological features and processes. In addition to the connections to our science curriculum, the field trip was fun - providing many opportunities for students to bond through team building activities!
Due to the generosity of the Milton Foundation for Education and the Pierce PTO, there was no cost to students to attend the trip. The MFE donated the funding for every student to participate in the experience at Moose Hill and the PTO covered the transportation expenses.
We are incredibly grateful to the MFE and Pierce PTO for their support in providing fun and enriching experiences for our students!

At the end of October, the MHS Poetry Club hosted an Open Mic Night in the MHS courtyard. Almost one hundred students showed up and shared their voices and lyrical talents at this beautiful event that brought a diverse student audience together. It was a heartwarming evening filled with inspiring performances, supportive applause, and a strong sense of community.
One student reflected, "I found Open Mic Night to be an engaging and fun experience. It was a nice event to hang out with friends while also being able to hear people’s thoughts through creative forms of literature. The weather, decorations, and hot chocolate created a cozy atmosphere that was enjoyable."
