On April 4th, members of the Milton Youth Advocates for Change attended the Norfolk County District Attorney's Peer Leadership Conference at Gillette Stadium with about 150 other students. Drug Story Theater provided the "keynote", which included a play about opioid overdose based on a true story. All of the actors are young people in recovery. Next, there were two breakout sessions for the students. Milton youth all attended a presentation by Minding Your Mind which featured a young woman bravely sharing her struggles with her mental health. The students split up and attended different sessions during the second breakout. The conference wrapped up with leadership awards, lunch and a closing presentation. Thanks to the Milton Police Department and Officer Martin who provided transportation. Pictured back from left to right: Griffin Angus, Emily Vogel, Zakai Perkins, Margaret Carels. Milton High School art students recently had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the rich, immersive world of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, one of the top art museums in the country. From ancient Egyptian mummies and elegant Greek vessels to stunning Roman sculptures and the light-filled canvases of Monet, students explored an incredible range of artwork across time and culture.A standout moment of the day was the powerful exhibition "Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson." A Roxbury native, John Wilson, celebrated as one of Boston’s most influential artists. Beyond the awe-inspiring collections, the trip was a welcome change of pace. Engaged, curious, and thoughtful, students enjoyed viewing the art and connecting with peers in new ways. As studies show, museum visits are proven to reduce stress, expand social connection and increase emotional engagment—all of which were clearly felt throughout the day. With renewed energy and fresh perspectives, students return to the classroom ready to channel their inspiration into their own creative work as we head into Term 4. What better way to spark curiosity and ignite the imagination?

MHS Music Travels to NYC! The Milton High School Music Department recently traveled to New York City for an incredible trip! 120 students embarked on this cultural adventure, and the memories made were truly unforgettable. The group attended a truly inspiring evening at Carnegie Hall, where they were mesmerized by the legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter as she performed a program which included a world premier piece “Likoo” by Aftab Darvishi. The energy continued on Broadway with a powerful performance of Hadestown, leaving us all in awe of its storytelling and music. The final performance was Jazz at Lincoln Center's Tribute to Gerry Mulligan. This concert was an educational experience and included an appearance by 97 year old legendary bass player Bill Crow who played on the original Gerry Mulligan recordings. The students also had an opportunity to experience the sights and culture of NYC. From posing with the stars at Madame Tussauds to reflecting at the solemn 9/11 Memorial, taking a river cruise to the Statue of Liberty, exploring Times Square, and a visit to the Bronx Zoo offered a great snapshot of what the city has to offer. The students even got a behind-the-scenes peek at the iconic Madison Square Garden. This NYC adventure was a fantastic blend of world-class music and iconic city experiences. The energy and enthusiasm of the MHS Music Department truly made this a trip to remember!

MHS students Leif Harris, Liam Manares, Layla Raymond, and Dan Winterberg took a trip out to Worcester last week to be a part of a presentation by MHS music teachers Rebecca Damiani and Julia Hanna at the MA Music Educators All State Conference. Mrs. Damiani and Ms. Hanna presented a session about creating opportunities for student leadership within school music programs and shared information about some of the great student leadership taking place at MHS, including elected student officers, peer mentoring, independent/group honors projects, and student-directed ensembles. As part of the session, Leif, Liam, Layla, and Dan each presented about their own experiences in the music program and shared ways in which they've taken on leadership roles that have impacted their own musical journeys. The other music educators present at the session loved hearing from the students directly and many were inspired to adopt similar policies and activities at their own schools . We love celebrating the collaborative nature of music-making and sharing our successes with the greater music-education community across the state. Congratulations to our students and teachers on a job well done!

Over the course of March, MHS Student Leaders helped promote mindfulness across the school, including events such as four-way volleyball, walk and talks, Bingo, Lucky Advisory, a raffle, a school-wide playlist, after school crafts, coloring pages, and a visit from a therapy dog. These events were held during advisory or after school as a way for students and staff to connect and socialize in a friendly environment. The events all month were very successful as Student Leaders, students and faculty members enjoyed their time together throughout the many activities!

Music Discovery Night was a hit! Thanks so much to everyone who joined Tri-M students for their first Music Discovery Night on Monday, March 24. Our MHS music students had a blast introducing younger students to new instruments through an interactive "Instrument Petting Zoo," exploring various ways to make music using technology, and creating shakers out of recycled materials and face-painting in the craft area! Students of all ages also had the opportunity to make music together by singing "We Don't Talk About Bruno" in three part harmony and rocking out on bucket drums and improvising to the song "We Will Rock You." Our MHS music students loved meeting members of the Milton Music community during this event and can't wait for more opportunities to collaborate together in the future!

Thanks to MHS student Fabiola Goyau and her classmates for this write up about their recent field trip! Read below to hear their thoughts. Our experience at the Future Steminist conference was amazing. It was a great opportunity to connect with other women interested in STEM and learn more about women in science. We enjoyed the different activities such as DNA extraction and the Harvard Medical School MEDscience patient assimilation. Through these activities we learned how to find DNA in fruit and how to diagnose a patient in real life with the very little experience that we had. These activities were super helpful and inspiring for everyone. Other classes included Sea Level Rise hosted by Stone Living Lab; Lab Automation - Leveraging Robotics to Improve the Scientific Process; Lego Robotics; Rocket launches hosted by the Museum of Science. After the sessions were done, each activity organizer held a resource table where we could gather information on each of the programs. The volunteers at the resource tables had built interest into several colleges to apply for like Simmons University, BU, and MCPHS. They offered pamphlets and other tools useful to any student looking to pursue a future career in STEM. Overall, we would like to thank UMass Boston for allowing the program to use their campus as a venue, providing a delicious breakfast and lunch, and hosting such an amazing event! Also, we would like to thank the School to Careers organization for connecting us and providing transportation.

As part of a unit on West African empires, our seventh grade Social Studies students were invited to listen to Elsa Wiehe, a professor at Boston University's African Studies center and a native of Mauritius, an island nation off the along Africa's east coast. Her presentation reflected the topics our students have been studying for the past month; the Sahara as a trade route, the settling of civilizations along the Sahel, the wealth of African kingdoms like Mali, Ghana and Songhai through salt and gold trade, and the educational mecca of Timbuktu. Students were also able to learn about African jelis - those venerated members of African society that acted as historian, poet, musician and artist. In a connection to the present, Professor Wiehe played some of the music of a modern-day jeli who performed in Boston last year.
