It is with great excitement that we announce the outstanding achievement of three MHS students who have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards! As the nation's longest-running and most esteemed recognition program for creative teens, the Scholastic Awards celebrate exceptional young talent across the country. Siabh Chaplin, Grade 9, earned a Silver Key for her captivating short story, Elmstone Manor. Maya Sekhar, Grade 11, was awarded a Silver Key for her intricate 3D woven baskets, Childhood in Scraps. Ann Nguyen, a senior who will be attending the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the fall, received a Silver Key for her painting, Chà Một Cột, and a Gold Key for her digital artwork, Evergreen. Ann's Gold Key winning piece will now move on to be judged at the national level—a remarkable honor. Recognition from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers is a tremendous accomplishment. Ms. Kelley's freshman MHS Social Studies class recently participated in their own Peace of Paris Conference, which took place after World War 1. Students represented different countries at the end of the war and tried to negotiate a peace plan. Our students did a great job staying in character while advocating for their country's rights and realized how difficult it is to make sure each country is represented fairly.

Unified Art Trip to MFA! As we wrap up a fantastic semester of our MHS Unified Arts class, we were excited that students had the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts during the last week of class. To fund the trip, students held a successful handmade ornament sale over the holidays. At the museum, they explored artworks that have been central to our studies this semester, including Monet's Waterlilies, Ancient Greek storytelling vessels, traditional African masks, and a large scale modern sculpture by glass artist Dale Chihuly. This visit allowed students to connect the dots between what they learned in class and the real-life masterpieces they encountered, deepening their appreciation and passion for art. Students were particularly excited to share this experience with their peers, stepping beyond the walls of Milton High to engage in a unique artistic journey. They would like to thank everyone who supported them with the ornament sale - you made this rewarding experience possible. Students from the Unified Arts class look forward to showcasing their artwork from their very successful first semester at the MHS Fine Arts Show in May!

Celebrating Our Differences (COD) is a 4th grade disability awareness program that helps students understand what it is like to live with different abilities. The program consists of five units which include learning differences, physical differences, vision, hearing, and autism. Across the five units, the program helps build empathy by incorporating hands on activities with a lecture from a guest speaker to share their personal experiences living with a disability. A highlight of the program is having MPS students serve as guest speakers to share their experiences with their peers. All fourth graders across the four elementary schools participate in the program. For the 1st lesson of this year, throughout the month of January, our 4th graders participated in the Vision unit. We were excited to welcome back our guest speaker, Dave Lynn. Dave brought his guide dog, Frosty and talked with our students about how he uses his guide dog to help him remain independent and navigate the world despite losing his vision. Students learned about the assistive technology available that individuals with visual impairments use to remain independent, as well as how to respectfully approach and offer to guide an individual with a visual impairment. Thank you to Dave Lynn - and Frosty - for spending time with our students!
