Assistive Technology
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 1997) an assistive technology (AT) device is defined as: “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.”
How can Assistive Technology help my student in the classroom?
Help a student with a disability to complete a task that he/she could not otherwise do without it.
Allow a student to do a task more easily, faster, or in a better way.
An AT tool can be a no tech, low tech, or high tech item.
